Questions vs. Answers

· Writing

Imposter Syndrome is a problem.

I have this fear that something I make is going to look homemade; and even when it’s being sold and well received I spot the holes and flaws.

Imposter Syndrome also leads to this feeling that I can’t possibly start writing yet, because I don’t have all the answers. And let’s be clear, I don’t have all the answers. But if I wait until I do, then I’ll probably never write anything at all.

I don’t write because I’ve done the work, I write because I’m doing the work. Writing helps me think, process, lay it all out and look at it from a new perspective. It’s a bit like therapy in that way; once it’s all on the paper you can do the positive reframing and search for exceptions and move to a new story, one that’s not preplanned but constantly developing as the writing takes place.

I sincerely hope that I will never have all the answers. There will be people who come after me who pick my work apart, look at it with fresh eyes, and build something altogether new on top.

So, the plan is to set aside the need for perfection, write anyway, and see where we end up.
